Impacts of COVID-19: The Present (and Future) State of Grocery
Fri March 27, 2020

The grocery store of today has been greatly modernized from the grocery store of twenty-five years ago. The breadth of products, private label, specialty departments and the atmosphere are very different. However, unlike non-grocery retail—where today is drastically different than 25 years ago—the process of grocery shopping today is still stuck in the past. Most non-grocery shopping today begins online and 20% is completed online, while the majority of today’s grocery shopping does not begin with an online search and only 3% is actually done online.

Impacts of COVID-19: Uncertainty and the Flow of Goods
Thu March 26, 2020

Twenty-five years ago, the supply of goods to the consumer was in the hands of the supply professionals. The retail planners worked with the manufacturers and they decided how much of what items they would sell to the consumer. However, as each year has passed, the control of the flow of goods moved from the supply side to the consumer—or demand—side. Today’s sophisticated Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) processes attempt to forecast the demands of consumers and satisfy this demand by producing the right items in the right quantities at the right time. For some products, S&OP works well (the amount of tomato soup the consumer will desire) and for other products, the S&OP process does not work so well (women’s fashion). But then in January 2020, the whole game changed and even the best S&OP processes in the world are woefully inadequate to synchronize supply to demand.

Impacts of COVID-19: The Emergence of the Supply Chain Profession
Wed March 25, 2020

Twenty-five years ago, the term “supply chain” began to be used to describe an integrated end-to-end process of the Planning-Buying-Making-Moving-Storing-Selling of materials, goods and products. However, the inconsistent use of the term almost killed its true meaning, as supply chain was often used to describe a wide variety of activities that reported to a myriad of different departments, including procurement, sales, finance, operations, merchandizing, logistics, strategy, planning and more.

Impacts of COVID-19: The Role of Digital Commerce

Grocers Feed Growing E-commerce Demands with Micro-Fulfillment Strategies

Despite conflicting predictions, online grocery is beginning to gain momentum, with sales estimated to reach $29.7 billion in 2021, more than double the $14.2 billion in sales in 2017, according to Statista. Grocery is largely responsible for Walmart’s e-commerce growth in the last 12 months, with the retail giant posting its strongest quarterly growth in Q3 with a 41 percent increase in e-commerce sales. This can be attributed to recent advances in grocery offerings, including free and same-day pickup and delivery services for thousands of locations across the U.S.

Customer Demands and eCommerce Solutions
Mon August 12, 2019

With customer demands and eCommerce sales continuing to grow at lightning speed day after day, the supply chain is taking on a different—and highly important—role in shaping the customer experience. A late delivery or laborious return process can cause enough dissatisfaction to drive a customer to the competition. In addition to fast shipping and low prices, retail giants like Amazon and Walmart place a heavy emphasis on the customer experience, a China-born concept that is now going global. Widely known as ‘New Retail,’ Alibaba defines its holistic approach as “the complete integration of online, offline, logistics, and technology for a single value chain.” According to Frost & Sullivan, by 2020, customer experience will exceed price and product as the key brand differentiator, further fueling the urgency for supply chain leaders to adapt to this burgeoning trend.

Increasing Profitability Through Inventory Optimization
Mon March 11, 2019

Planning and execution have been more blurred in recent times, as technology is now providing users access to near real-time visibility and data, enabling them to adjust plans to meet reality. One of the most important execution issues is the management of inventories, especially in the new world of demand-driven operations. In traditional execution, inventories are pushed out to Distribution Centers/Fulfillment Centers (DCs/FCs) and business customers with expectations that those customers would need them at some point in time. Thus, deploying the inventory push to the network of DCs/FCs for customers has been the business objective. As business customers have become more sophisticated, and consumers have demanded more personalization and online buying, demand-driven operations have required more ‘pull’ inventory, which means decentralizing only which will be sold in the short term (think ‘sell one, replace one’). Therefore, distributed inventories based on pull for order fulfillment, or inventory flow, must complement the pull inventories at DCs/FCs for larger business customers. This new operating strategy has changed the business objective for the execution of product distribution, and in turn, created many challenges within the supply chain.

The Key to a Distributed Logistics Solution

Many have blamed the reduction in customer traffic in brick and mortar stores as a reason for the decline. Rather, is this a reflection of the store experience or a real change in the traffic behaviors of the base consumer? At the same time, businesses that offer high customer service (e.g. Starbuck’s, Chick Fil-A, and Apple) have carved out a competitive stronghold with price not being the driver.
